Le 26 fevrier 1989 Dda lmouloud n'At Maamar décède dans un accident de circulation à Ain Defla en Algérie,  après son retour d'un colloque tenu a Oujda au Maroc. La foule qui l'a accompagné dans sa dernière demeure était impressionnante. Elle était a la hauteur de l'œuvre qu'a accompli Dda lmouloud. Intellectuel connu et reconnu, il a jeté les fondements d'un éveille identitaire d'une Algérie amputé par tant d'année du déni et du mépris de l'histoire. Dda lmouloud, tu vivras ! illa yiwen illagh, oulachith, wayedh oulachith yella.
